Plant Maintainer (Hospitals)/Tender (NYC H+H) Guide
Plant Maintainers (Hospitals)/Tenders (NYC H+H), under supervision, install, lubricate, maintain and tend power plant, pumping, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning equipment and related systems serving hospitals and health care facilities. They may inspect, maintain, repair and/or tend equipment used in heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning and related mechanical systems; inspect and read meters, gauges and other controls of operating equipment; may tend and/or operate boilers and related equipment, except where equipment requires a New York City high pressure boiler license or refrigeration engineer's certificate, may assist in this function; clean burners; may dismantle and/or assemble equipment associated with the heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning or mechanical systems and to make it operational; may requisition parts as required; maintain inventory; and maintain necessary work records and logs. All Plant Maintainers (Hospitals)/Tenders (NYC H+H) perform related work. (For NYC Health + Hospitals Only).
SALARY RANGE
$41.40 per hour for a 40-hour work week ($86,112 per annum; subject to change)

Key Job Duties
What you will act and execute daily upon appointment:
- Install, lubricate, maintain, and tend power plant, pumping, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning equipment and related systems serving hospitals and healthcare facilities.
- Inspect, maintain, repair, and tend equipment used in heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and related mechanical systems.
- Inspect and read meters, gauges, and other operational controls of plant equipment.
- Tend and operate boilers and related auxiliary equipment (or assist where a high pressure boiler license or refrigeration engineer certificate is required), and clean burners.
- Dismantle and assemble equipment associated with heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air conditioning, or mechanical systems to make it operational.
- Requisition parts as required, maintain inventory, and maintain necessary work records and logs.
Filing & Appointment Eligibility
Candidates must fulfill these rules BEFORE certification:
- Pathway 1: Three years of full-time satisfactory experience in the lubrication, maintenance, and repair of boilers or incinerators or air conditioning or related equipment, or in the operation and maintenance of high pressure boilers; OR
- Pathway 2: Not less than one and one-half years of experience as described in (1) above plus sufficient relevant training acquired in an approved trade school, technical school, or vocational high school, or education at an accredited college/university, to make up the remaining required experience (credited at 6 months of experience per year of approved education).
- Deadlines for Requirements: Education requirement needed to qualify must be met by September 22, 2027. Experience requirement must be met by the last day of the Application Period (September 22, 2026).
- Medical & Drug Screening: Eligibles must pass an NYC Health + Hospitals medical examination and drug screening prior to appointment.
- Residency: City residency is NOT required for this position.
- English Requirement: You must be able to understand and be understood in English.
- Proof of Identity: Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, you must prove identity and right to obtain employment in the United States prior to employment with NYC Health + Hospitals.
- Agency Jurisdiction: This examination is for positions with NYC Health + Hospitals only. The resulting eligible list will terminate one year from establishment unless extended.
Computerized Examination Pattern
Multiple-choice test conducted at a computer terminal (score of 70% or higher required to pass). Evaluates operation, maintenance, and repair of high-pressure boilers, pumps, and related auxiliary equipment; inspection and testing of boilers and refrigeration equipment; selection and usage of lubricants, packing, and gaskets; number facility; written comprehension; and written expression.
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions
Physical activities performed and environments experienced in this role:
- Climbing stairs, ladders, and over boiler room equipment; standing upright for extended periods of time.
- Using vision to read small numbers and markings on gauges and equipment, and vision/hearing to avoid overhead piping and rotating machinery.
- Communicating orally in a noisy working environment, and walking over wet and slippery concrete surfaces.
- Working in areas containing gases from combustion processes, strong odors from grease/lubricants/solvents, and confined areas inside boilers and under piping.
- Lifting metal objects weighing up to 60 pounds, and working with alkaline and acidic boiler water treatment chemicals.

Operational environments and agency-specific criteria:
- Shift Schedules: Plant Maintainers (Hospitals)/Tenders (NYC H+H) will be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
- Medical & Drug Screening: Mandatory pre-appointment medical examination and drug screening under NYC H+H standards.
- Agency Scope: Positions are strictly with NYC Health + Hospitals facilities across the five boroughs.
